Why Homework Matters.
Why Homework Matters
I recently met a parent who decided not to enroll her child because her family does not believe in homework. Their belief is that home time is family time.
I understand that. Children absolutely need time with their families.
But I also believe that a little purposeful practice can make a big difference.
At New Gains Academy, homework isn't about hours of worksheets or overwhelming students. We focus on fluency and foundational skills, including reading fluency, cursive writing, times tables, spelling sentences, word hunts, definitions, and typing practice.
The goal isn't to make learning harder. It's to make learning easier over time.
Fluency gives students the opportunity to practice skills until they become more comfortable and automatic. And parents don't have to be teachers to help. Listening to a child read, practicing multiplication facts, or asking about their spelling words can take only a few minutes.
Homework doesn't have to compete with family time.
It can be a small part of helping a child grow.
At New Gains Academy, we believe children need both—time to be children and opportunities to strengthen their skills.
Because sometimes, a little practice today creates a lot more confidence tomorrow.
